Tue 8:00a-5:00p -0:30 = 8:30
Wed 8:00a-5:00p -0:30 = 8:30
Thu 8:00a-5:00p -0:30 = 8:30
Fri 8:00a-3:30p -0:30 = 7:00
total = 41:00 = 41.00 h
OT = 41.00 - 40 = 1.00
pay = 40 x 20 + 1 x 30
= $830.00Count every minute worked. Rest breaks of about 20 minutes or less are paid work time; only a real meal break (typically 30 minutes or more, fully off duty) can be unpaid. Non-exempt staff get at least 1.5x for hours over 40 in each workweek, so two weeks are never averaged. Rounding punches to the nearest 5, 6 or 15 minutes is allowed only if it evens out over time.

Track hours free for 14 daysShort answer: For each day, take the clock-out time minus the clock-in time, subtract the unpaid break, then add the days up. Divide the minutes by 60 for decimal hours: 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.50 hours.
Who this time card calculator is for
Managers and small business owners adding up staff time cards before payroll, and hourly workers checking their own hours. It handles overnight shifts, lunch breaks, rounding and overtime, and shows every step.
How to use it
- Enter the hourly rate (optional), the country and when overtime starts.
- Type each day's in time, out time and unpaid break in minutes. Pick Two weeks for a biweekly card.
- Read the total, then copy the link, print it or download the CSV for payroll.
Worked example
8:00 am to 5:00 pm with a 30 minute lunch is 9:00 minus 0:30, so 8:30 or 8.50 hours. Four of those days plus a 7 hour Friday is 41.00 hours. At $20 an hour that is 40 x $20 = $800, plus 1 overtime hour at $30, so $830.

Time card questions
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 minutes is 0.50 and 45 minutes is 0.75, so 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours.
Is a lunch break paid?
In the US, a meal break of typically 30 minutes or more where you are fully off duty does not have to be paid, but short rest breaks do. In the UK, your contract decides whether breaks are paid.
How is overtime worked out on a biweekly time card?
Week by week. In the US each workweek stands alone, so 45 hours then 35 hours means 5 overtime hours, even though the two weeks total 80.
How do I count an overnight shift?
Enter the out time as it is, for example 10:00 pm to 6:30 am. The calculator sees that the shift ends the next day and counts 8.5 hours before the break.
