Toggl Track alternative: TrustHours vs Toggl in 2026

Toggl is a polished time tracker that refuses to monitor employees: no screenshots, no keystrokes, no webcam, no location, ever. TrustHours does the opposite on purpose, with open and employee-visible monitoring. This page helps you decide which philosophy fits your team.

The short answer

If you do not want screenshots or activity monitoring, choose Toggl: it is built on that principle and TrustHours is not the right tool. If you pay remote staff by the hour and want proof of work, screenshots, payroll in 40 currencies, chat and an AI connector at one price, choose TrustHours.

The honest version

Who should pick TrustHours, and who should stay on Toggl

This is the one comparison where the honest answer is often "do not switch". Toggl and TrustHours disagree about whether tracking should include monitoring.

Pick TrustHours if

You pay by the hour and need proof of work

  • You manage remote hourly staff or contractors and want screenshots and activity for verification.
  • You want payroll in 40 currencies built from tracked hours. Toggl does not run payroll.
  • You want team chat, files and video calls in the tool.
  • You want employees to know exactly what is captured, with a published explanation and a tray pause.
  • You want an AI connector that acts with approval.
Pick Toggl if

Zero monitoring and a polished planner

  • You do not want to monitor anyone. Toggl says it will never build screen recording, location, keystroke or webcam features.
  • You want project planning: timeline, boards, capacity, utilisation, profitability and forecasting.
  • You want timesheet approvals with locking, rounding and labour-cost history.
  • You want SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 statements and a mature product.
  • You need macOS, Linux and mobile apps today, and calendar and Jira or Asana integrations.
Stay on Toggl if

Toggl fits how you work

  • Your culture is trust-based and monitoring would damage it.
  • Your clients buy billable hours without screenshot proof.
  • You use its Timeline, which records apps and sites for the user only.
  • You are a freelancer or consultancy that tracks time for billing.

Toggl changed its naming in 2026. "Toggl Track" is now described as the legacy product and "Toggl" (formerly Toggl 2.0) became the flagship in September 2026. Toggl says Track is not going anywhere and nothing changes unless you choose it. Prices here are from toggl.com/pricing.

Monitoring stance

Monitoring: Toggl says never, TrustHours says openly

These two products take opposite positions. Neither is wrong, but they suit different teams, so be clear about which you want before comparing features.

Features

Features that decide the choice

Eight areas where the two tools differ in ways that change your day.

Project planning and profitability

This is where Toggl is far ahead. Its planning layer covers timeline and Gantt views, boards, capacity, utilisation, profitability and forecasting, and it added a Capacity Management add-on in October 2026.

TrustHours has projects, tasks and clients, check-ins and flags, but no planning or profitability suite.

TrustHoursProjects, tasks and clients.

Payroll and invoicing

Toggl does not run payroll and says so on its payroll hours page. It exports hours to CSV and PDF, and does not invoice natively.

TrustHours runs payroll in 40 currencies with salary history on Team. It has no built-in client invoicing either.

TrustHoursPayroll built in from Team.
TogglNo payroll, exports only.

Approvals and timesheets

Toggl offers timesheet approvals with locking, rounding and labour-cost history. TrustHours has manual time requests, leave and holidays, check-ins and a daily digest on Team.

AI connector

Toggl has an official MCP server and CLI, local to your machine, on every plan including Free, listed in the MCP Registry, plus an AI assistant. TrustHours' connector reads and acts with your approval, only for permissions you grant. See the AI connector page.

Platforms and mobile

Toggl runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and the web, with browser extensions. In 2026 some users on the community forum reported two separate desktop apps during the move to the new Toggl product. TrustHours is Windows only today, with macOS coming.

Reputation

Toggl reviews and reputation

Toggl scores strongly with users on G2 and Capterra. Trustpilot is a much smaller and more negative sample. Scores were taken on 27 October 2026.

SourceTrustHoursTogglWhat to know
G2 (Toggl Track)Too new to have a rating yet4.6 out of 5 from 1,589 reviewsMany reviews are seller-invited
Capterra (Toggl)Too new to have a rating yet4.7 out of 5 from 2,592 reviewsEase of use 4.7
TrustpilotToo new to have a rating yet1.8 out of 5 from 67 reviewsSmall sample; 5 reviews in the last 12 months; mostly support and refund complaints

TrustHours is new and has no review-site score. Toggl's G2 and Capterra scores are excellent, so choose on philosophy and features, not on a rating.

What Toggl users praise

  • Ease of use and a clean interface.
  • Simple, reliable time tracking.
  • Handy reporting.
  • A generous free plan.
  • Works across desktop, web and mobile.

What Toggl users criticise

  • Limited features such as no calendar view or sync issues (G2).
  • Custom reporting locked behind paid plans.
  • Price beyond the free tier for teams of more than a few.
  • Forgotten timers, since timing is user-started.
  • Support and refund disputes (Trustpilot, individual accounts).
Switching

How to switch from Toggl to TrustHours

Think about the monitoring change first: moving from a no-monitoring tool to a monitoring one is a cultural decision, not just a software one.

  1. Decide with your team why. If people have worked under a no-monitoring promise, explain the reason for the change before you announce a tool.
  2. Export from Toggl. Export Summary and Time Logs reports as CSV, Excel or PDF, and use the API for bulk pulls. Rates and cost history export only as report files.
  3. Start a TrustHours trial. 14 days, no card. Invite the team. TrustHours cannot import time entries, so past hours stay in your export.
  4. Tell your team before you install. Send the message below and link what TrustHours sees.
  5. Install the Windows app and set the rules. Choose the screenshot interval, blur and skipped apps, then add pay rates.
  6. Cancel Toggl. Check the plan term. Some Trustpilot reviewers report refund disputes on annual plans, so cancel before your renewal date and keep confirmation.

Toggl has no full account export tool that we could confirm, so export what you need before cancelling. If you are on Toggl Track, nothing forces you to move to the new Toggl product.

Message to send your team before you switch

Subject: We are moving to TrustHours for time tracking

Hi team,

From [date] we are moving from Toggl to TrustHours. Here is what that means for you.

- You will be asked for permission before tracking starts.
- It captures your tracked time, a screenshot at a random moment in each interval, which apps were active, and keyboard and mouse activity counts. It never records what you type.
- Nothing is captured while you are paused, on a break, or the app is closed. You can pause from the tray icon at any time.
- You can see your own hours, screenshots and activity in your app.

Method, disclosure and corrections

Who wrote this. TrustHours made this page, so we have an interest in you choosing us. We tried to make it useful even if you stay on Toggl, which is why it says where Toggl is the better fit.

How we checked. Every Toggl statement comes from a Toggl page, its help centre, or its listings on review sites, opened on 27 October 2026 (see Sources). When a figure comes from a pricing guide or a listing because the vendor page loads prices with JavaScript, we say so. Vendor claims are shown as claims. Toggl's Track and Toggl products share some pages, so figures come from toggl.com/pricing and its docs.

What we did not do. We did not run a hands-on accuracy test, and we do not repeat unverified opinions from forums. Where we could not confirm something, we left it out or marked it as not stated.

Corrections. Prices and features change. If you find something out of date, tell us and we will fix it and update the date. Last full check: 27 October 2026.

Questions

TrustHours vs Toggl: questions people ask

What is the best Toggl Track alternative?

It depends on what you miss. For monitoring, payroll and chat, TrustHours. For a free tracker with more users, Clockify or Jibble. For invoicing, Harvest. For analytics with monitoring, ActivTrak or Insightful. If you want a tracker with no monitoring at all, stay on Toggl.

Does Toggl Track take screenshots?

No. Toggl says it does not monitor employees or take screenshots, and that it will never have screen recording, location, keystroke or webcam features. If you need screenshots as proof of work, you need a different tool such as TrustHours.

Does Toggl monitor employees?

No. Toggl says monitoring has never been a feature and never will be. Its desktop Timeline records your own apps and websites, but that data stays visible only to the user. TrustHours is the opposite: open, employee-visible monitoring.

How much does Toggl cost?

Starter is $9 per user per month billed yearly or $12 monthly. Premium is $16 yearly or $24 monthly. A free plan covers up to 3 users per its pricing FAQ, and Enterprise is custom. There is a 30-day trial.

Is TrustHours cheaper than Toggl?

Yes for team plans. TrustHours Team is $8 monthly or about $6.67 yearly against Toggl Starter at $12 monthly or $9 yearly, and includes payroll and chat. But Toggl includes no monitoring, so the products are not equivalent.

Is Toggl Track free?

Yes, with limits. Toggl's pricing FAQ says the free plan covers up to 3 users, and it includes timers, tasks, the MCP server and CLI. TrustHours also has a free plan for up to 3 users, and includes screenshots every 10 minutes.

Is Toggl Track being discontinued?

No sunset date has been announced. Toggl named a new product, Toggl, its flagship in September 2026, and says Track is not going anywhere and nothing changes unless you choose it. Some forum users reported confusion and two desktop apps during the transition.

Does Toggl run payroll?

No. Toggl says it does not run payroll. You export hours as CSV or PDF into your payroll tool. TrustHours runs payroll in 40 currencies with salary history on Team.

Can Toggl invoice clients?

Not natively. Toggl exports time as CSV or PDF for invoicing tools. TrustHours has no built-in client invoicing either. If invoicing is central, look at Harvest.

Does Toggl have an AI or MCP connector?

Yes. Toggl has an official MCP server and CLI that run locally and are available on all plans, including Free, plus an AI assistant. TrustHours' connector reads and acts with your approval, only for permissions you grant, and asks before each action.

Does Toggl work on Mac and Linux?

Yes. Toggl runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and the web. TrustHours supports Windows now, with macOS coming and early access for the first 20 founding teams.

Can I import Toggl data into TrustHours?

Not today. Export Summary and Time Logs reports as CSV or Excel, and keep them for your records. Then start fresh in TrustHours at the start of a pay period.

Is TrustHours as secure as Toggl?

Toggl states SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001:2022. TrustHours has a selectable data region and publishes what it captures, but does not claim SOC 2 or ISO yet. If you need those certificates, Toggl is the safer choice today.

Will my team accept switching to a monitoring tool?

Often not unless you explain it. Tell them before you install, say exactly what is captured and what is never captured, and let them pause. TrustHours publishes a plain-language page for staff that you can share, and a message template is on this page.

Is it legal to monitor employees with TrustHours?

The software is lawful in most places, but notice rules vary. New York, Connecticut and Delaware require written notice, and UK guidance expects openness and the least intrusive approach. This is general information, not legal advice, so confirm with a lawyer.
