Bonuses and commission can raise the regular rate, exempt staff are not owed overtime, and some states have their own daily rules, so check with your state labor department. Overtime questions

Is overtime paid after 8 hours in a day?

Not under federal law, which only counts hours over 40 in the workweek. California pays overtime after 8 hours in a workday, and some other states have daily rules of their own.

Is double time required by law?

Not by federal law. California requires double time for hours over 12 in a workday and for hours over 8 on the 7th consecutive day worked in the workweek.

Do UK employers have to pay extra for overtime?

No. GOV.UK says employers do not have to pay for overtime, and your contract sets the rate. Your average pay for all the hours you work must still be at least the National Minimum Wage.

Can overtime be averaged over two weeks in the US?

No. Under the FLSA each workweek stands alone, and averaging hours over two or more weeks is not allowed.
