Short answer: MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant connect to a tool. With a time tracker that has an MCP connector, you stop reading reports and start asking questions, such as "who worked less than 6 hours this week, and why?"
The old way vs the new way
Normally you open a dashboard, pick a date range, export a table and work out the answer yourself. With a connector, you ask in plain English and the assistant looks up the data and replies with the numbers behind it. Because it computes from real records, the answer is arithmetic, not a guess.
What it can read
- Who is working right now, and on what.
- Timesheets by person, day or project.
- Activity, breaks, leave and missing-hours requests.
- Payroll totals for a period.
What it can do
The same connector can create projects and tasks, post to team chat, send announcements, and approve leave or missing-hours requests, but only if you allow it. Reading and acting are separate permissions.
Staying in control
Start read-only. Add actions one by one once you trust the answers. Keep a human decision on anything that changes pay or approves time off.
Which tools offer it
As of October 2026, TrustHours includes a connector on the Team and Business plans. Hubstaff, Toggl Track and Time Doctor list MCP access, and Insightful has an MCP server page. Clockify does not state one.
